The coronavirus has drastically changed our lives as well as the ecosystem of mobile applications. During the 2020 lockdown period, we were not allowed any offline social activities. As a result, our smartphone became the primary tool that was supporting our everyday lives and interests. For mobile apps, this year has brought unique possibilities as well as challenges.
Some statistical data of the most popular apps of this year is remarkable. Provided by Sensor Tower, a reliable source of mobile application metrics used by leading companies, state institutions, and start-ups, the top chart of the most downloadable mobile applications might seem surprising to you!
Top 10 Non-Game Apps
From January till August 2020, TikTok was the most downloadable app in both Apple Store and Google Play. However, it made a step down to let the video streaming Zoom win the chart in April. WhatsApp began to lose its second position in April to get the fifth place in August.
Facebook has been more or less stable and ended in August with January’s line number three. Instagram also faced some ups and downs but finally arrived at the year’s starting fourth position. Messenger dropped from the fifth place to the eighth, while YouTube left the top-10 list in March.
As for the newcomers, fantastic Zoom hit the chart in March, winning the third place, and in August, it already placed second. As we mentioned above, April made Zoom the most downloadable app in the world.
Google Meet joined the most popular apps company in June as the sixth and kept this position until the end of August. It is interesting to see Telegram to occupy the last place in August, which makes you wonder where it will move in the future.
Billion Revenues of Gambling Publishers
Game downloads also scored spectacular results. People installed games of different genres, enjoying strategic, battle royale, and simple slots. Starting from the fifth place in January, PUBG Mobile reached the second position in May and left the August chart. Talking Tom Friends created by Outfit7 managed to stay the most popular game in June and July, ending with number seven in August.
The gambling companies occupied the first six spots in the top-20 revenue growth list, with nearly $1 billion in revenues for the quarter. Imagine that this data includes only downloads from the official stores and no direct link installations. Though gambling apps showed the highest gains, games with social interaction as Roblox (sandbox genre) and Fortnite (battle royale) also had good financial results.
Google is the Top Publisher
During the last six months, we changed our attitude toward mobile devices. Since we value smartphones for their applications, the worldwide app downloads increased dramatically during the April-June period. Sports, navigation, and tourist apps stepped aside, making way for educational, communicational, health, and business-oriented 2020 apps.
Zoom reached about thirty million installations in the second quarter, making its way closer to the epic TikTok and WhatsApp. Still, Google remains the top publisher of the applications that people install not only due to the growing Google Meet and Google Classroom, but mostly because of the irreplaceable YouTube, Chrome, and Google Maps.
